Western Oregon rejects gun toting student's appeal

March 3, 12:14 PM

Western Oregon University rejected the appeal of suspended student Jeff Maxwell, of Lebanon, OR. Maxwell was suspended for having two weapons on campus: a tactical knife on his person and an unloaded semi-automatic rifle in his truck. Maxwell, a former marine, also had a loaded pistol in his pocket at the time, but the University dropped sanctions related to that offense after Maxwell produced a concealed weapons permit.
Maxwell has been suspended through June 12, 2009. As part of his suspension Maxwell must write a 10 page paper on obeying the law. However, Maxwell will not have to undergo a psychological evaluation to prove he is not a danger to himself or others.
The university did the right thing by upholding Maxwell's suspension. It would have been easy to give in to the vocal protests of the gun lobby. Easy but wrong. This country needs more, not less, gun control.
Why would anyone want students to be armed on campus? Walking around with a loaded pistol is simply foolish. Such a fool puts not only himself but all those around him in danger. It is time that all citizens stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby. Guns do not belong on campus.

It’s up to shoppers
Mar 17, 2009 - 8:41 PM - by mysteryman
good point by a reader. people who complain about walmart should stop supporting them by shopping there.

It’s up to shoppers

Regarding the letter headlined “Who killed Roth’s.”

Good letter, but you forgot to ask the population of Lebanon why they continue to shop there. The people that shop at Walmart are no better than the planning commission that allowed it to be built.

As long as they shop there and do not support the local grocery stores they are equally to blame. Lebanon of all places should understand supporting a local company.

Roth’s was locally owned, mid-priced and service orientated. Shop N Kart is locally owned and inexpensive, and if you ask they will gladly help.

Lebanon, do the correct thing and support your own!

cat killer in lebanon
Mar 17, 2009 - 8:39 PM - by mysteryman
what the hell is wrong with people this story is pulled from the albany paper.

Quote:
Who would shoot a cat?

To the person who shot our cat: I would love to thank you personally for taking the time and consideration on Feb. 18, when you deemed it necessary to use a handgun to shoot our male, black and mostly white family cat. (Probably a good target in a green field.)

His name is Nickel, named because his older sister, a basset hound dog, is named Penny. Nickel is a good house cat and a family member to our three boys as well as ourselves and our friends.

Lucky for us they only had to amputate the leg. Oh, we were so happy! He was alive, he was home, he was going to be OK.

Then, he was seriously sick and needed attention. Animal Clinic found that his bladder had been grazed on the very top. At the clinic he stayed.

At least you didn’t poison him with some yummy antifreeze or, even worse, keep him or kill him, and we’d never see him again. The unknown is the worst. So thank you, you big, strong, gun-wielding, cat-hunting loon! You’re a great shot!

It only cost our family $2,000. This bill coming four days after Penny had to have an emergency hysterectomy.

Doing a quick calculation I came up with this:

Price we paid for Penny to regain her perk, $1,089.

Price we paid for a living, triple Nickel, $2,049.

Price we paid for pamper products, 178.

Knowing your animals love you without a doubt, priceless !

A three-legged cat walks into a bar and says, “I’m looking for the man that shot my paw.” Have info? Millersgal@comcast.net.

ATV crash in Toledo kills Lebanon woman, injures man

by Michael Russell, The Oregonian Thursday March 05, 2009, 8:12 PM

A woman died and a man was hospitalized after an all-terrain vehicle crashed early today in Toledo, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office reported.
Deputies responded about 3:25 a.m. to the 300 block of Schlecht Road, said Deputy Abby Dorsey, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
Emily Mae Smith, 20, of Lebanon, a passenger on the ATV, was found dead about 35 feet off the roadway.
The ATV operator, Nicholas James Estrada, 25, of Lebanon, was injured and appeared impaired, Dorsey said.
Estrada was taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. Hospital officials declined to release his condition.
Oregon State Police troopers and Lincoln City and Newport police assisted in the investigation, which is continuing.

Kenneth McBride
Mar 17, 2009 - 8:30 PM - by mysteryman
this story is from foxnews.com

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. —
Prosecutors in Skagit County, Wash., have charged an Oregon man with first-degree murder in the slaying of a school track coach who reportedly was involved in a "swinger" lifestyle that included the defendant's wife. Kenneth McBride was arrested Wednesday at his home in Lebanon, Ore.
He lived in Skagit County when Jeremy Scully, an assistant track coach and substitute teacher, was shot to death in April 2008.
Detectives served a search warrant at the home of McBride and his wife, Venessa, after Scully's body was found. They seized several firearms, among other items.
Court documents say Venessa McBride gave birth to a child in January 2009.
The documents say the child would have been conceived during a period when she had sexual encounters only with Kenneth McBride and Scully, and Kenneth McBride had undergone a vasectomy.
